One Minute Preceptor


  1. Get a Commitment - What do you think is going on with this patient? What do you want to do at this stage?
  2. Probe for supporting Evidence? - What led to your diagnosis or decision? What else did you consider?
  3. Teach General Rules - One or two points, generalizable to other cases
  4. Tell Them What They did Right and The Effect it Had - Reinforces good behaviors, be specific!
  5. Correct Mistakes - Again, be specific!

  • Narrows differential diagnosis to 2-3 possibilities
  • Analyzes differential by comparing and contrasting possibilities
  • Probes preceptor by asking questions about uncertainties, difficulties, etc.
  • Plans Management for patient care
  • Selects issue for self-directed learning
